CENTRE OF RESEARCH EXCELLENCE FOR ADVANCED COOPERATIVE SYSTEMS

The Centre of Research Excellence for Advanced Cooperative Systems (ACROSS) is an interdepartmental research centre at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. The centre performs research in cooperative systems related to robotics, networked embedded systems and renewable energy systems. Its establishment and operation is funded by the European FP-7 Capacities "Research Potential" program [285939, FP7-REGPOT-2011-1].

Abstract:

Model predictive control algorithm for photovoltaic panel orientation can improve photovoltaic system netto power production. The model predictive control synthesis procedure comprises two basic steps: (i) identification of solar irradiance model and development of the photovoltaic system model and (ii) development of predictive control algorithm for the photovoltaic panel active surface orientation, based on the obtained models. Performance of the developed algorithm is verified through year-scale simulations based on a large number of solar irradiance and other weather data patterns. It turns out that the proposed algorithm is fully competitive with the mostly used sun tracking or maximum irradiance seeking controls, and that it outperforms them. The other advantages of the proposed algorithm are: (i) the positioning system is controlled smoothly and (ii) prediction of energy yield one day ahead is available together with its uncertainty for easier photovoltaic system integration into the electricity distribution network.

 

CV:

Marko Gulin received his master degree in electrical engineering and information technology from University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (UNIZG-FER) in 2011. Currently, he is with the Department of Control and Computer Engineering at UNIZG-FER, where he is pursuing his PhD degree. His research interests are in the area of control theory with application to renewable energy sources and microgrids, advanced estimation techniques and overall performance improvement.
