Abstract:
A classical problem to tackle in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in order to ensure their long lifetime is to mitigate idle listening of the node’s communication unit. It is particularly important for WSN systems detecting events that occur rarely (e.g. for triggering alarms). Special applications of such WSNs for event detection are video surveillance and gas monitoring. Their common characteristic is employment of power-consuming sensors (order of magnitude of typical commercial transceivers). Thus, these implementations require reducing energy consumption both on the communication and the sensing unit. We investigate i) wake-up receivers for reducing communication energy consumption, and ii) multimodal hierarchical sensing with context-aware adaptive duty cycle for reducing sensing energy consumption. This talk presents combined power management methods for event detection in wireless networks of energy-hungry sensors. It gives a systematic comparison of to-date prototypes for wake-up receivers and hierarchical sensing, and proposes energy saving solutions in WSNs for video surveillance and gas monitoring applications.
CV:
Vana Jeličić received her Masters (Dipl.-Ing.) degree in Electrical Engineering, major Industrial Electronics, from Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER), University of Zagreb, in 2009. Since then she has been working towards her Ph.D. as a research associate in the Advanced Instrumentation Group (AIG), at the Department of Electronic Systems and Signal Processing, FER. Her research interests are in the area of smart sensors and wireless sensor networks (WSNs), with focus on power management in WSNs with high-consuming sensors. From 2007 to 2011 she participated in MasliNET, a project in cooperation of Siemens d.d. and FER, for designing a WSN for monitoring microclimate conditions and pest detection in olive groves. In 2010, she spent 6 months as a visiting researcher at Micrel Lab, Department of Electronics, Informatics and Systems (DEIS), University of Bologna, Italy, where she performed research in energy efficient techniques for heterogeneous multimodal WSNs for ambient intelligent applications (smart video surveillance and smart gas monitoring). She was awarded the Erasmus Mundus JoinEU-SEE scholarship for the academic year 2011/2012 as an exchange doctorate student at the University of Bologna (Micrel Lab). There she carried out research in the context of FP7 projects for structural and ambient monitoring (GENESI and 3ENCULT), under supervision of prof. Luca Benini. Since July 2012, she participates in the EU FP7 project “ACROSS - Center of Research Excellence for Advanced Cooperative Systems”.
