CENTRE OF RESEARCH EXCELLENCE FOR ADVANCED COOPERATIVE SYSTEMS

The Centre of Research Excellence for Advanced Cooperative Systems (ACROSS) is an interdepartmental research centre at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. The centre performs research in cooperative systems related to robotics, networked embedded systems and renewable energy systems. Its establishment and operation is funded by the European FP-7 Capacities "Research Potential" program [285939, FP7-REGPOT-2011-1].

Abstract:
Going beyond quality of service concepts which are more technology- and network-oriented, quality of experience (QoE) describes the overall service performance from the end-user standpoint and considers a wider set of influence factors than network parameters. In order to enhance the current management of operational networks, a new direction in networking research relates to exploring QoE-based management and control decisions which are more "user-centric". This talk will first present main motivation behind the proposed approach of QoE-driven path optimization for multimedia services. The approach deals with assigning media flows of multiple communication sessions to the most suitable network paths, so as to maximize the sum of QoE for all users. As such a problem may be formulated and solved with the means of network optimization, fundamental principles of the network flows optimization will be briefly described. The talk will then focus on modeling and a mathematical formulation of the path assignment problem, which will also include presenting general design guidelines. In addition, a software implementation of the optimization model will be outlined, along with how the associated problem was solved. In the end, an initial evaluation of the optimization model and remarks regarding future work will be described.
