Abstract:

Sound power is the main property of a sound source. As such, it serves as input data for simulations and real-world applications oriented towards the prediction of noise impact of such a source on the surrounding environment, together with other characteristics of the source, the properties of the environment and the distance to the receiver, enabling us to determine the resulting sound pressure at any receiving point in the environment. The presentation explained the basic quantities used for describing sound related phenomena, including the specific measures and parameters that incorporate the properties of the human hearing used for quantifying noise as unwanted sound. As one of these quantities, sound intensity is measured using the sound intensity probe. Its operating principle, the demands on the measurement system and limitations are discussed. Sound power of a source is measured by standardized indirect measurement methods, using sound pressure (the ISO 374X family) or sound intensity (the ISO 9614-X family), designed for different levels of accuracy (precision, engineering, survey) and different environments (free field vs. diffuse field, laboratory vs. in-situ). Practical examples are given on sound power measurements and sound intensity imaging.

CV:

Marko Horvat received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the UNIZG-FER in 2001 and 2010, respectively. He is currently employed as a senior research assistant at the same institution and is actively involved in research and teaching in the fields of noise management, product sound quality, room and building acoustics, sound reinforcement and electroacoustics. Professional aspect of his work includes acoustic design and planning, as well as various kinds of observation/verification measurements, mostly in noise management and room/building acoustics. He has published 40 scientific papers in journals and conference proceedings.
