The Centre of Research Excellence for Advanced Cooperative Systems (ACROSS) is an interdepartmental research centre at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. The centre performs research in cooperative systems related to robotics, networked embedded systems and renewable energy systems. Its establishment and operation is funded by the European FP-7 Capacities "Research Potential" program [285939, FP7-REGPOT-2011-1].

Abstract:

 

This talk presents novel methods and approaches in detecting buried landmines utilizing low-frequency electromagnetic induction (EMI) sensors. Today's metal detectors are sensitive to extremely small amounts of metal – they can sense only a firing pin and a spring/washer mechanism weighting a gram in plastic-encased blast mines. Since the conventional metal detector cannot discriminate between a firing pin of a mine and a harmless piece of metallic clutter, the result is enormous rate of false positive alarms on the order of 1000 false alarms per one mine. In order to reduce the false alarm rate, advanced EMI detectors feature multi-static coil configurations, complex waveform excitation and inversion algorithms to obtain information on shape, principal dimensions, position, orientation and material properties of a buried object. We propose a design of a laboratory prototype of a model-based EMI detector that features estimation of model parameters of a metallic object and the surrounding soil.

Davorin Ambruš is a research associate in the Research Centre for Advanced Cooperative Systems (ACROSS) at the Department of Electronic Systems and Information Processing, University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER). He received his Dipl.-Ing. and M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering, major Industrial Electronics, from FER, in 1999 and 2005, respectively. He is currently pursuing towards his Ph.D. at the same university. From 2000 to May 2012 he was with Brodarski institut Ltd., Control Engineering Department. During that period he served as a researcher and a project leader responsible for a large number of commercial projects in the field of electronic instrumentation and industrial control and monitoring systems. His research interests are in the area of low frequency electromagnetic instrumentation, model based measurements, harsh environment electronics and networked embedded systems. His current research is mainly focused on the development of advanced metal detectors and related inversion algorithms for humanitarian demining applications.
