The Centre of Research Excellence for Advanced Cooperative Systems (ACROSS) would like to invite you to an event on:

"Japanese Robot Technology"

held by Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro and dr. Nobuo Yamato, Osaka University Japan. The event  will take place on the 17th of November, 2011, starting from 13:50 and  on the 18th of November, 2011, starting from 14:00 in the lecture room B4 at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. More about the event you can find in the detailed news content.

Event Agenda:

13:50-14:00 – Opening speeches

Prof. Ivan Petrović, Seminar Organizer

Mr. Yoshio Tamura, Japanese Ambassador

Prof. Nedjeljko Perić, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing

14:00-15:30 – Japanese Robot Technology, presentation by Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro

15:30-15:40 – Break

15:40-16:00 – Discussion

16:00-16:30 – Demonstration of humanoid robots, dr. Nobuo Yamato

16:30-17:00 – Photo Session

Presentation Summary:

As the symbol of the most advanced of Japanese technology, the lecturer will explain the history of the research in this field and its technological and cultural features. Specifically, Prof. Ishiguro will tell us how he started the robot study and its background (Japanese robot technology of that period), technical features and applications of robots he has created, the relationship between robot development and human lives of today and its future.

Demonstration of humanoid robots:

4 kinds of bipedal robots that the experts bring will introduce themselves, play football and sumo wrestling, and play air-guitar music session. (For the big humanoid robots that they could not carry this time, they will explain features with movies and pictures during the lecture period)

Speaker biography:

Prof. Hiroshi Ishiguro (http://www.is.sys.es.osaka-u.ac.jp/index.en.html) received a D.Eng. in systems engineering from the Osaka University, Japan in 1991. He is currently Professor of Department of Systems Innovation in the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka University (2009-). He is also visiting group leader (2002-) of Intelligent Robotics and Communication Laboratories at the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute and the ATR fellow. He was previously Research Associate (1992-1994) in the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka University and Associate Professor (1998-2000) in the Department of Social Informatics at Kyoto University. He was also Visiting Scholar (1998-1999) at the University of California, San Diego, USA. He was Associate Professor (2000-2001) and Professor (2001-2002) in the Department of Computer and Communication Sciences at Wakayama University. He then moved to Department of Adaptive Machine Systems in the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka University as a Professor (2002-2009). His research interests include distributed sensor systems, interactive robotics, and android science. Especially, his android studies are well-known very much in the world.
