CENTRE OF RESEARCH EXCELLENCE FOR ADVANCED COOPERATIVE SYSTEMS

The Centre of Research Excellence for Advanced Cooperative Systems (ACROSS) is an interdepartmental research centre at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. The centre performs research in cooperative systems related to robotics, networked embedded systems and renewable energy systems. Its establishment and operation is funded by the European FP-7 Capacities "Research Potential" program [285939, FP7-REGPOT-2011-1].

Abstract:

In this talk, we present a methodology that reduces the requirements posed on communication, sensing, processing and energy resources in multi-agent networks (MANs) without compromising MAN objectives. Consequently, the hardware expenses and energy consumption are driven down whilst MAN multitasking, such as inter-network collaboration, is facilitated. Scenarios, in which agents of one network need to achieve a common goal, call for the study of decentralized cooperative control schemes. To accomplish this goal in an uncertain and noisy setting and to detect changes in the communication topology, agents have to exchange information. Since each transmission and reception of information necessitates energy, communication should be induced only when the goal completion can no longer be guaranteed in order to prolong the MAN mission. Thus, we devise an information exchange mechanism which draws upon the ideas of self-triggered communication. The proposed mechanism is inspected both theoretically and experimentally (employing off-the-shelf wireless sensor platforms) for performance vs. lifetime trade-offs using a single-integrator consensus case study. Our mechanism is applicable to heterogeneous agents with exogenous disturbances, to directed switching communication topologies and to both initial condition-dependent and initial-condition-independent long-term cooperative behaviors. The investigated stability notions include Lp- and input-to-state stability (with respect to a set).

 

CVs:

Vana Jeličić received her Masters (Dipl.-Ing.) and PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, major Industrial Electronics, from Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER), University of Zagreb, in 2009 and 2014, respectively. Since then she has been working towards her Ph.D. as a research associate in the Advanced Instrumentation Group (AIG), at the Department of Electronic Systems and Signal Processing, FER. Her research interests are in the area of smart sensors and wireless sensor networks (WSNs), with focus on power management in WSNs with high-consuming sensors. From 2007 to 2011 she participated in MasliNET, a project in cooperation of Siemens d.d. and FER, for designing a WSN for monitoring microclimate conditions and pest detection in olive groves. In 2010, she spent 6 months as a visiting researcher at Micrel Lab, Department of Electronics, Informatics and Systems (DEIS), University of Bologna, Italy, where she performed research in energy efficient techniques for heterogeneous multimodal WSNs for ambient intelligent applications (smart video surveillance and smart gas monitoring). She was awarded the Erasmus Mundus JoinEU-SEE scholarship for the academic year 2011/2012 as an exchange doctorate student at the University of Bologna (Micrel Lab). There she carried out research in the context of FP7 projects for structural and ambient monitoring (GENESI and 3ENCULT), under supervision of prof. Luca Benini. Since July 2012, she participates in the EU FP7 project “ACROSS - Center of Research Excellence for Advanced Cooperative Systems”.

Domagoj Tolić is a postdoctoral researcher in the Research Centre for Advanced Cooperative Systems (ACROSS) at the Department of Control and Computer Engineering ,University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER). He graduated from FER with a Masters degree (Dipl.-Ing.) in Electrical Engineering in 2007., majoring in Control Systems. In addition, he graduated from the Mathematics Department of University of Zagreb with a Bachelor Degree in Mathematics in 2008. Afterwards, he enrolled in the Ph.D program, the Control Systems major, at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of New Mexico (UNM), Albuquerque, NM. He completed his Ph.D program in August 2012. His research focuses on stability and estimation under intermittent information for nonlinear control systems. The developed theory is applied to problems in the area of multi-agent robotics.
